2) Floating on a lake: Resto Apung in Kintamani (Prices start at USD 12 for two)

Resto Apung is located on the shore of Lake Batur but you can choose (who wouldn’t?) to eat on the gazebo, which is built on a platform that skims the lake’s surface, connected to the restaurant by a walkway.

The restaurant is part of the lovely Menjangan resort, which is in the Bali Barat National Park.

10) Swoony décor for your inner Euro: Balique in Jimbaran (Prices start at USD 40 for two)

Balique is almost too hip to be real.

Housed in a large open-sided joglo, its neighbours are motorbike repair and helmet stores.

Enter and be completely astounded by its vintage style – European-style armchairs, antique cashier machine and candy jars, hanging glass lamps.

Every inch of Balique is ornate, thoughtful and beautiful, you might even suspect it’s a plot to distract you from (bad) food.

But that’s not true.

The menu is as eclectic as the décor, featuring tastes from Morocco, France and around Asia.

Sardine is located in a vast airy bamboo building, which may be more sculpture than simple structure.

Half of it overlooks the paddy fields nearby.

You can also linger at the lounge area and watch the rare white carp in the pond (which are pets, not food, so don’t feel guilty bonding with them).

On the menu, you will find seafood and organic vegetables freshly harvested from the restaurant’s garden.

12) Live dangerously: Madu Sari Mountain Restaurant (Prices start at USD 20 for two)

Madu Sari Mountain Restaurant is, as its name suggests, located on a mountain.

To be precise, Madu Sari is on the very edge of the crater of Mount Batur, a still-active volcano, that thankfully spends most of its time asleep.

If you dine here, you’ll sit surrounded by streaks of molten lava from previous eruptions, green pine shoots, and Lake Batur, a crater lake.

A variety of local and European food will be served buffet-style, and you can go to the nearby Volcanology Museum afterwards for a very nerdy V-Day celebration.

Breakfast options are: fruit, pancakes and toast with a variety of jam.

The lunch spread includes three choices of soup, rice fried and plain, cap cay, fried chicken, fried tuna, beef stroganoff and others.

Café Pomegranate is not simply a unique cafe, but it’s also the special place you’d want to bring your date to.

Located 700 metres deep in a rice field, it’s built on elevated ground, disconnecting it from the rest of central Ubud.

Upon a cursory glance, dinner at Jimbaran Bay doesn’t seem overly romantic – you choose uncooked seafood at beachfront stalls that cook it for you on outdoor grills, so there’s lots of smoke and smells.
